The acronym REACH stands for “ R egistration, E valuation, A uthorisation, and Restriction of Ch emicals.” The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) enforces it. ECHA maintains a list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs). These substances are considered to be carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic for reproduction, or bioaccumulative. The European Union (EU) Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive have many things in common: both are required for market access, are commonly managed by product and/or materials compliance departments, and restrict the use of potentially dangerous substances in all products sold.

REACH (EC 1907/2006) aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.
